Gardenview: Budding Scientists Discover Sound Vibrations

Jodi Schwartz, B.A.S.E. Animator This fall, Miss Jodi had the budding scientists at Gardenview B.A.S.E. daycare learning about how sound works. She asked everyone to gently touch their throats while saying their names. They all felt their fingers vibrate. Miss Jodi explained that for a sound to happen, something has to vibrate, move, or shake….

Gardenview Science: Static Electricity

Jodi Schwartz, B.A.S.E. Animator This week, Gardenview budding scientists learned about static electricity through six mini experiments, all using balloons charged with static to move objects – they learned that static acts as a magnet either attracting or repelling objects. In first experiment, the children drew objects that can fly onto small pieces of parchment…

Parkdale: Budding Scientists Reveal Secret Message

Jodi Schwartz, B.A.S.E. Animator Parkdale Budding Scientists were at it again! Today they were also magicians: they created messages that disappeared, and used science to make them reappear. First, Miss Jodi gave everyone a piece of blank paper. In a bowl, she mixed ¼ cup of baking soda with ¼ cup of water. She prepared…

Parkdale: Budding Scientists Learn about Acids and Bases

Jodi Schwartz, B.A.S.E. Animator Early morning science is one of the best ways to start the day. Luckily for the Parkdale B.A.S.E. Daycare children, Miss Jodi arrived with not one, but two science experiments for them to try. First up was drawing personalized volcanoes on strips of paper, wrapping them around a cup, and making…

Hampstead: Mason Jar Music

Hampstead scientists created beautiful melodies this week in Ms. Jodi’s science program using mason jars. They filled the jars, each with a different level of water, ranging from full to almost empty. Ms. Jodi added some food colouring to make the jars easily identifiable. Each student had a chance to use a wooden spoon to gently…

Westmount Park: Getting Messy

Slime is always a big hit when it comes to science class and experiments, so for our Monday science class the students voted that we make slime! Three simple ingredients turned into hours of fun. We mixed together some glue, shaving cream and contact solution to get some fluffy slime. When asked if making the slime…

In phase two of the HydroFlora project happening at St. Raphael, students have moved from doing more hands-on projects to more theoretical learning, much to the amazement and happiness of the…

Budding Scientists: Air Pressure

Budding Scientists at John Caboto Academy and Hampstead discovered air pressure by creating hoop gliders, and tinfoil boats.  Hoop gliders were fabricated via strips of paper taped into the shape of hoops (one large and one small), which were fastened to either end of a straw. The children customized their hoop gliders with drawings of things that fly, such as hot…
