General Vanier: Future Junior Chefs

Carmela Filippi, Educator, General Vanier

Every Friday a special cooking class takes place after school with daycare educator Ms. Gina and the Kindergarten and Grade 1 students. Ms. Gina teaches the junior chefs how to chop up ingredients and then mix them together.

A few weeks ago, the students learned how to make vegetable and avocado fajitas. The ingredients the students received were lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, spinach, avocados, cream cheese and a tortilla.

Step 1: Wash the vegetables.
Step 2: Chop the ingredients into little pieces so they will fit into the tortilla.
Step 3: Place all the ingredients into the tortilla and roll it up.
Step 4: Eat!

The Kindergarten and Grade 1 students enjoyed creating a delicious and healthy snack. The engaging activity taught them the importance of washing the vegetables before eating them, how to dice the ingredients, and finally how even healthy snacks can be fun to make and definitely delicious!
