Cedarcrest: Colourful Ice Castles

Since winter can be long and dreary, the Grade 2 students of the B.A.S.E. daycare program at Cedarcrest Elementary added some pizazz to their winter daya by making coloured ice blocks!

To make your own colourful ice castle, you will need:

  • Water
  • Food colouring
  • Empty cardboard milk cartons
  • A cold, winter day!

Our winter activity started with collecting different sized milk containers. Students helped fill them with water, added drops of food colouring and then stirred the water. We also mixed colours together to make different shades of various colours.

Once students brought the cartons outside to the schoolyard, the water froze over a weekend (but you can do it overnight or place them in the freezer too).

The children had fun ripping apart the milk cartons and revealing the beautiful, coloured blocks of ice! They used them to build formations on top of the snow.
