Edward Murphy: Seed-Collecting/Saving Workshop

Van Ferrier, Green Animator

Members of the Edward Murphy Green Club took part in a seed-collecting workshop on Wednesday, November 2, 2016. Students from Grades 3, 4, and 5 learned about the importance of maintaining the genetic diversity of food crops by solving a fun mystery about what scientists are saving by the millions in a vault deep underground in the Arctic. The answer is seeds! The students learned that, given the right conditions, seeds can be saved for long periods of time and doing so can protect humanity against threats to our food supply. Out in the garden, students collected seeds from a variety of flowers and food crops including Echinacea and tomato. At the end of the workshop, student’s watered strawberry runners they had transplanted one week before. The students look forward to having more fresh strawberries in the garden next summer!
