Dalkeith: Heart Beet Cookies for St. Valentine’s

Green Club celebrated a cozy St. Valentine’s Day by baking Heart Beet Cookies! Of course, the cookies are heart-shaped for the holiday, but the students took it a step further and dyed the dough pink.

To support B.A.S.E. Daycare’s Environmental Consciousness Core, the children learned about natural food dyes, which date back to 5000 years ago in China. All kinds of materials such as plants, barks, minerals, and even insects were used to dye fabric different colours in ancient times.

Today, Ms. Julia’s Green Club students at Dalkeith Elementary used grated beet root to dye their cookie dough pink. Beets naturally have a strong dark red colour, and they lend their colour to everything they touch! Now the students have a new appreciation for beets, which they will learn to grow themselves in their schoolyard garden! Happy St. Valentine’s!
