Cedarcrest: Art-Tastic Fun!

Hania Souleiman, B.A.S.E. Daycare Animator

My approach to the Art-tastic class is to introduce students to different artists every week and to plan an art activity inspired by the artist of the week. I choose an artist based on their colourful palette, their expressive forms and whimsical lines, to which young children can relate. Joan Miro’s paintings are a beautiful reflection of these elements.

We talk about the chosen artist’s life and their artworks. On Monday, November 9, 2015, I showed the students Miro’s paintings and asked them to come up with their own version, which they enthusiastically agreed to.

First, they had to come up with a rough sketch on newsprint, then they copied their drawings on to a 4″ x 6″ piece of bristol board using a pencil. After that, they used crayons to retrace their lines and finally added colours using watercolour tempera cakes.
